Overview:
Don’t become a website designers vanity project. I have had many clients inform me that they had previously paid for several website rebuilds over the years, however there was no real marked improvement in sales.
In my opinion and from my experience with website developers, most website redesigns are often overly focused on aesthetics, even to the extent that the web designer uses a clients website as a personal vanity project to showcase their design skills.
Aesthetics are not only subjective they are also only one half of the website coin. A website has to say something. Literally! There has to be words on the page; headings and content all of which must have equal footing – or in my opinion a higher footing – than any design consideration.
Content is paramount, in-fact content should dictate the design. Unfortunately this is seldom the practice, if you are looking to improve any website effectiveness always remember that the very words chosen are important and the placement of hero messaging is vital.
Often websites do have great messages and fantastic information but it is all lost in a sea of words, the result is low impact, assuming the visitor ever reads it at all.
